Pay the Designer!
Travis

Designer Jin Yang recently wrote an interesting article titled Pay the Designer!
It’s not an article on anti-spec work, although I touch up on it slightly. It deals with another issue I believe that’s been hurting the web design industry: when designers undercut the price of their services among themselves, it devalues the whole industry.

this is the BEST post on Creattica by FAR!
I know i feel the same way that Harlan Ellison talks about in the interview.
Thanks for the post Travis

blah blah blah… these days, designers are commodities like programmers. You can get the same quality work from numerous sources online (99designs.com), at hugely cheaper rates than “a proper designer”.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m a freelance developer myself and do very well with my clients. There’s enough room in the market for those that want quality, and those that want something slapped up quickly.

Great article! I just find it funny that I came across it from here, a part of Envato that sells design/programming/whatever for 10 $ a piece :)

Wowzers.. he has taken the words from my mouth… I was having a very similar conversation only a few weeks ago having started looking more towards freelancing.
All of the internet based sources are in my opinion a complete waste of time unless you are willing to work for shirt buttons. There is always another individual willing to do the work for next to nothing. I simply can’t afford to work for nothing and offer my services at a ridiculously low price. But as stated in this artical… the more designers discount their rates and bend over, the more it harms the industry as a whole and not just in web design, eventually all creative areas. I guess we have to rely on clients to identify the difference between quick and cheap work, and quality at a price.
